How We Serve
Our members serve in a variety of ways and are engaged in various ministries in the church, including:
Altar Serving – A team of individuals who assist with the ceremonies involved in the celebration of the Eucharist. Children as young as age 9 may serve; most of our servers are adults.
Altar Guild – A group of people who care for the linens used during the Mass and who “set up” and “clean up” before and after celebrations of the Eucharist. This involves removing and later replacing dust covers; preparing the vessels to use used at Mass; washing them and storing them afterwards; and occasionally polishing the silver and brass used at the altar.
Coffee Hour Hosts – After most 10:30 masses, many worshipers adjourn to the parish hall for coffee, light refreshments, and fellowship. A host is needed each week to provide food (cold drinks, cookies, a cake, cheese and crackers, fruit, or some combination of these or other things). The church provides the coffee.
Grounds Care – Volunteers from the church cut the grass each week from late May through the end of September. Our property is small, and the job takes less than 30 minutes. The church supplies the mower and gas.
Lectors – Individuals sign up to read Holy Scripture at the 9:00 and 10:30 masses.
Serving the Community
Bellefonte Food Bank
- Each month we call the food bank and ask what food and personal items are most needed. We collect those for the month and transport them from the church to the food bank each week.
Bellefonte Youth Center
- St. John’s volunteers provide a dinner for the Youth Center twice a month. Approximately 15-20 are served.
- Saint John’ s and the Youth Center have a shared three-bed garden behind the rectory. Vegetables are planted and tended by children from the Youth Center with assistance from St. John’s.
- Provide occasional programs/fundraisers such as the Shrove Tuesday pancake supper.
